Drake and Stapleton Claim Kil-Kare Wins

Xenia, OH (8/21) - A very good crowd was on
hand Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway for the NASCAR Whelen All
American-Series events plus the big school bus race and demolition
derby. When the checkers fell on the features it was Scott
Drake claiming the late models and Jerry Stapleton the modifieds.
Neil McClelland and Jeff Marsh brought the
field to the green in the late model feature for thirty laps with
McClelland in the lead as Scott Drake went to the outside to
challenge for the lead. Drake made his pass good on lap three as Sam
Heckman took third followed by Justin Alsip and fast timer Ricky
Bates. The caution came out to slow the field and when the green
reappeared Drake still maintained the lead as he pulled away from
the field. Drake in his Eddie Simpson owned car still held command
as Alsip was working on Mahaffey, trying to close the gap with Bates
not far behind.
At the halfway mark it was still Drake with
a two car lead but the traffic behind was inching closer. Alsip made
a charge to the outside of Mahaffey but third place riding Mahaffey
shook him off as they began to lap cars. Drake continued to stretch
out his lead but Sam Heckman had Mahaffey not far behind him as the
laps wound down. Alsip made a lap 29 challenge to nip Mahaffey for
third at the finish line as Drake scored his third win of the year.
Heckman was home second followed by Alsip, Mahaffey, and Bates.
The second feature to hit the track was the
Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds for thirty laps with Grant
Gamble and Joe Jennings leading the field to the green as Jennings
shot into the lead only to see the caution come out when two cars
tangled on turn four calling for a complete restart. Jennings again
jumped into the lead but Jerry Stapleton slid sideways on turn one
with Dick Dunlevy and Mike Carroll also involved making another
restart necessary. For the third time the green waved and again
Jennings took command but Ralph Harrod moved into second followed by
Derek Barnette who took second as Harrod took the lead and Jennings
dropped back to third. Lap three saw another caution as four cars
tangled on the backstretch with Steve Foster with a tire rubbing
departed to the pits as did Jamie Brenneman with Foster and
Brenneman both returning.
Again the green reappeared with Harrod
still in front but eighth place starter Jerry Stapleton shot into
third with Dick Dunlevy and fast timer Tyler Nuckles on the move.
Barnette moved alongside Harrod as they ran side by side with
Stapleton right with them. Meanwhile Dunlevy was edging closer on
the trio. By the halfway mark Dunlevy had caught them making for a
four car battle. Dunlevy tried the outside of Stapleton to no avail
and here came Jason Mahaffey and Nuckles as they caught the front
runners. Action was stopped on lap nineteen when apparently oil was
dropped on the track.
After a delay to clean the track action got
back underway Harrod was still in the lead with a battle between
Stapleton and Dunlevy for third as in front Barnette went to the
outside of Harrod in a fight for the lead. Barnette and Harrod
apparently bumped on turn four with Barnette spinning wildly into
the outside wall on the drivers side binging the red flag out.
Barnette was conscious and talking to the squad and was transported
to a local hospital for observation.
Five laps remained when the event resumed
with Stapleton in the lead as Harrod was delegated to the tail after
the incident with Barnette. Jason Mahaffey was in second with Dick
Dunlevy, Tyler Nuckles and Mike Carroll in the top five. The running
order stayed the same right to the finish with Stapleton in the
Terry's Radiator Service machine taking the win.
Due to the long delay for the Barnette
incident and the crowd anticipating the school bus events the sport
stocks and compact features were postponed until next week when they
will run double features for these two divisions.
Nine big school buses faced the green flag
on the figure-8 course for a wild event with Mr. barrett in the the
Southern Ohio Paving bus in the lead to hang on for the win claiming
the $300 first place money. The demo derby saw one bus flip on its
side much to the fans delight. Butch Russell and Billy Bob ended up
in a draw to split the $300 prize money.
Kil-Kare will be back in action Friday,
August 28, with a full program NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
late models, modifieds. sport stocks, compacts plus the final
appearance of the season of the IKO mini cups. Gates open at 6 p.m.
and racing at 8 p.m. The super late models of the Main Event Racing
Series will return on September 4 for their second appearance of the
season.
