Mahaffey Captures Robbie Dean Memorial at
Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (8/7) - Friday night Kil-Kare
Speedway presented the annual Robbie Dean Memorial 94 lap late model
feature for the NASCAR All-American Series late models with the
event going to Don Mahaffey in the Oakley Blacktop machine. It was
an event with quite a few caution periods but the action was fierce
all the way with the top cars all running very close together.
Starting on the front row for the 94 lap
event was Jeff Marsh and Virgil Powell as they faced starter Mike
Stapleton's green flag for the long event. Marsh had the lead for
the first laps with Tim Rauch and Bobby Justus not far behind.
Working on the outside was David carter but Don Mahaffey slid into
third only to see the caution come out for a mix up on turn four on
lap eight. Jamie sites was in involved and went to the pits as Bobby
Justus, who was also involved was able to continue as was Tim
Allensworth who departed to the pits. Both Sites and Allensworth
returned.
After a few raindrops action resumed with
Marsh still out front with Mahaffey moving on the inside of Rauch
for second followed by Carter as Sam Heckman moved into fourth with
Mike Stacy then joining the rush to the front as Stacy took third
from Heckman followed by Scott Drake and Justin Alsip. Mahaffey put
his Oakley Blacktop machine out front as Carter tried to move up on
the outside in the mount formerly driven by Robbie Dean. Mahaffey
continued to shake Carter off but Mike Stacy stuck his nose on the
inside of Carter and contact was made as Carter spun bringing out
the caution and Stacy to the tail.
Action no more than resumed when Sloan
Henderson spun on the frontstretch but when the green resumed Carter
again set his sights on the leader as Kyle Jones slipped under Ricky
Bates for sixth. Jones then moved up on teammate Justin Alsip as
they chased fourth place running Scott Drake. Again the caution flew
on lap thirty six when Henderson coasted to a halt on the
backstretch.
Meanwhile Allensworth had moved up to sixth
and was closing in on Jones and Alsip as they too were moving up, up
on third place running Sam Heckman. At the halfway it was still
Mahaffey out front and Carter dogging him and then Alsip passed
Heckman followed by Allensworth who was now in fourth as he moved up
on Alsip. Unfortunately lap fifty two saw Carter's night end after
contact with the turn three wall and Alsip spun into the infield
bringing out the red flag.
Mahaffey now had Alsip, Allensworth,
Heckman, and Jones all ready to pounce on him for the lead.
Allensworth put the pressure on Alsip as Jones dropped Heckman back
to fifth. Again the caution flew on lap fifty eight as contact
between Justus and Virgil Powell sent Justus to the tail. It was
bumper to bumper after the restart as Jones nosed inside Allensworth
but Allensworth bounced right back as they fought for the spot.
Jones then took the third spot and once again the yellow flew as
Stacy spun on the frontstretch, departing to the pits.
On the restart Mahaffey had a big lead
leaving Alsip and Jones way back but they kept inching up on
Mahaffey and again it was a four car close group as Allensworth
moved in on the top three again. Alsip then tried the outside groove
but was unable to get the job done and here came Jones up on the
inside to take second as he and Alsip ran side by side. Action was
slowed when Virgil Powell spun on the frontstretch with three laps
to go. Mahaffey again shot off on the restart to lead to the checker
taking the win in the Oakley Blacktop sponsored machine followed by
Justin Alsip, Kyle Jones, Tim Allensworth, and Ricky Bates.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds hit
the track with thirteen cars facing the green flag for their thirty
lap feature with Grant Gamble and Joe Jennings in the front row.
Jennings had a slight lead but Jack Jones slipped on the inside of
Jennings to take the lead however Mike South Jr. and Jason Mahaffey
tangled on turn four bringing out the caution making for a complete
restart. South was able to continue but Mahaffey was eliminated.
Jennings again took the lead with Caleb
Reschar moving on the inside of him to steal it with Jack Jones
riding second and Jennings back to third as the caution came out
when Jamie Brenneman spun on turn four. Reschar, a one time winner
so far maintained the lead at the drop of the green flag restart
with Jones on Reschar's rear bumper as Derek Barnette passed
Jennings for third with Jerry Stapleton, Mike Carroll and Dick
Dunlevy in hot pursuit. Dunlevy worked the outside of Carroll,
passing him and then moved into third as he passed Barnette.
Barnette then made contact with Dunlevy resulting in Dunlevy
spinning and Barnette suffering a flat tire.
With nineteen laps to go Reschar had his
hands full with Jones and Dunlevy right behind him but Dunlevy had
smoke trailing behind him and Carroll momentarily stopped on turn
four and then departed to the pits as the yellow flew. On the
restart something broke on Jones car sending him into a spin on turn
one and out of action.
Jerry Stapleton then went to work trying to
catch Reschar as Dunlevy rode third and Carroll was back out and up
to fourth. With ten laps to go it was the top three cars running
bumper to bumper as Carroll was moving up on them. Stapleton tried
the outside but Reschar shook him off and here came Carroll up on
the outside of Dunlevy in a cat and dog fight for the front spots.
As the checker flew Reschar barely beat Stapleton across the line
with Dunlevy right there in third with Carroll fourth in a blanket
finish. Jennings held on for his best finish of the year as he came
home fifth.
A fine field of fifteen sport stocks faced
their feature but action was halted just as the green was about to
be waved as some seven cars tangled on turn four. Ron Lewis and John
Dunlap made up the front row with Lewis taking the lead as Joe
Hensel moved into second but back in the pack came two three winner
George Lindsey from the tail to fourth on lap five. However his
charge was slowed when Kenny Simpson and will Gregory tangled on
turn three forcing a caution. Lindsey moved on the inside of Hensel
as he tried for second and did so on lap nine. Jeremy English was
also on the move as he took fourth from Dunlap and again a caution.
Lindsey caught Lewis on the restart and took off from the field
leaving the others behind. Shawn Stansell was working his way toward
the front moving from ninth to fifth.
A caution on lap thirteen slowed the pace
but not Lindsey as he again set sail and Stansell sailed past
English for fourth. Stansell then went after Hensel but time ran out
as Lindsey took the win in the Bob's Auto Sales special with Lewis,
Hensel, Stansell, and English following.
David Sagers and Davey Shaw led the crazy
compacts to the green for their feature as Sagers took the lead with
Joseph Mansfield taking second and then three wide they went as Ron
Sagers took second and Bo Hoelscher joined them. It was quite a
battle for the lead as the Sagers ran side by side as the caution
came out as Steve Barnhart spun on the backstretch. At the same time
Dave Sagers was sent to the tail for breaking out giving the lead to
his brother Ron with Bo Hoelscher, Joe Hoelscher, and fast timer
Bryan Lynch up to fourth. Bo Hoelscher tried desperately to pass
Sagers lap after lap with Joe Hoelscher moving on the inside of Bo
as he attempted for second and what a battle it was for the front
spot all the way. Meanwhile Amber Sites was working her way up as
she took fifth place with five laps to go.
When the white flag waved it was still a
battle for the front as Ron Sagers took a very exciting win with Bo
Hoelscher second followed by Aaron Harshbarger, Amber Sites and Joe
Hoelscher the top five.
