Mahaffey Claims First Late Model Win at
Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (7/10) - Veteran driver Don
Mahaffey scored his first 2009 late model feature win at Kil-Kare
Speedway Friday night as Mike Carroll claimed the modified win,
Shawn Stansell the sport stock, Bo Hoescher the compact and Toby
Alfrey the legend feature.
Leading the field for the start of the
thirty lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature was
Sloan Henderson an Jamie
Sites as both were looking or their first
feature win. Henderson, the sixteen year old sensation took the lead
with Bobby Justus riding second as the caution came out due to a
spin by Virgil Powell on the backstretch. Don Mahaffey was third on
the restart and then tried the inside of second place running Justus
as they ran side by side. Justus then tried the outside path to
pass Henderson with Mahaffey doing the same. Sixth place starter
Justin Alsip then was on the move as he pulled along side third
place running Henderson. Justus was a strong runner as he pulled
away from Mahaffey with Henderson holding s strong third as Alsip
slipped back a little as the second caution appeared as Shawn
Sparkman spun.
Looking for his second feature win of the
year Justus held the front spot on the restart but Don Mahaffey
slipped up on the inside as the two raced side by side swapping the
lead as Mahaffey claimed the front spot on lap nineteen. Mahaffey
and his Oakley blacktop sponsored machine continued to set the pace
as the laps ran down but Justus was not giving up as he moved up on
Mahaffey's rear bumper as back in the pack Henderson had her hands
full holding off Alsip who slipped by for third with three laps to
go as Mike Stacy took fourth from Henderson. For Mahaffey it was his
first feature win of the year. Finishing second was Justus while
Alsip, Stacy, and Henderson rounded out the top five.
Looking for his second heat win of the
year, Jamie Sites started on pole of the first late model heat along
with bobby Justus. Justus took the lead with fourth place starter
don Mahaffey moving into second followed by fifth place starter
Justin Alsip. Justus claimed his second heat win of the year with
Mahaffey second, Alsip third, and Sites fourth.
It was Shawn Sparkman on the pole of the
second heat along with Scott Drake with two time feature winner
Drake taking the lead followed by Mike Stacy. Stacy tried the inside
of Drake but Drake kept shaking him off. Sparkman held on to third
with Virgil Powell trying him but when the checker waved it was
Drake taking his second heat win with Stacy second followed by
Sparkman and Powell.
Mike Carroll and Jamie Brenneman started
in the front row of the modified feature with Carroll in the Paul
Storer owned machine taking the lead with previous weeks winner
Jason Mahaffey into second as Brenneman spun on the backstretch.
Carroll continued to set the pace with Dereck Barnett running third
and fast timer Jerry Stapleton fourth. Caleb Rescher brought the
caution out on lap five when he spun on the frontstretch. Sixth
place starter Dick Dunlevy put the pressure on Stapleton as he
pressed him for fourth as they moved up on Barnette but contact was
made with Stapleton sliding through the infield and Dunlevy moving
back to the tail as Stapleton departed to the pits with a right
front flat tire.
With nineteen laps to go Carroll had the
lead on the restart with Mahaffey within striking distance with
Barnette still in third and Ralph Harrod fourth with Dunlevy on the
move from the tail to fifth position. Brenneman brought the caution
out on lap sixteen when she stopped on the frontstretch. Mahaffey
still dogged Carroll while Dunlevy battled on the high side of
Harrod as he tried for fourth and then went after third place
running Barnette. with five laps to go Mahaffey was still trying to
figure a way to catch Carroll and Dunlevy then displaced Barntte for
third. Carroll claimed his second win of the year with Mahaffey a
close second followed by Dick Dunlevy,Derek Barnette, and Ralph
Harrod.
In the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds
previous week feature winner Jason Mahaffey along with Dick Dunlevy
led the field to the green in the first heat with Dunlevy getting
the edge over Mahaffey for the lead as Mahaffey kept stuck to his
rear bumper. Derek Barnette then closed in on Mahaffey as Dunlevy
led to the checker to claim his third heat win of the year as they
finished in that order, Dunlevy, Mahaffey, Barnette, and Jerry
Stapleton.
Joe Jennings and Caleb Reschar started on
the front row of the second heat as they ran side by side with Ralph
Harrod joining them to make it a three car battle for the front.
Jamie Brenneman then took over third as Harrod slipped under
Jennings for the leas with Brenneman in tow with Harrod claiming his
second heat of the year with Brenneman second followed by Jennings
and Reschar.
Travis Braden and Bryan Nuckles led the
pack to the green for the FAST Legends twenty-five lap feature with
Braden out front with Toby Alfrey right behind him as Nuckles had
Taylor Webb on his rear bumper trying for third but it was James
Edsell passing Nuckles for fourth. The caution came out on lap nine
for a mix-up on turn four with Braden still out front for the
restart. Alfrey made an inside pass at the half-way mark to steal
the lead from Braden as the caution came out for debris. Alfrey had
his sites set on winning his first feature of the year as he
continued to set the pace with Braden still not far behind in
second. Nuckles was by himself in third with Kyle Baugh riding
fourth. When the checker waved it was Alfrey in the winners circle
with Braden second followed by Nuckles, Baugh, and Webb.
It was Taylor Webb jumping into the lead of
the first heat of FAST legend cars but Toby Alfrey slipped by him to
steal his brief lead with Webb in hot pursuit of Alfrey. Bryan
Nuckles whizzed into third as the caution came out for a spin. After
the restart Nuckles displaced Webb for second as Alfrey claimed the
win with Nuckles second followed by Travis Braden and Taylor Webb.
Kyle Baugh and Bo Stambaugh led the pack to
the green in the second heat and when the green waved Baugh set
sail into the lead and pulled away from the field. Stambaugh and
Chris Weddle followed with Heath Tateman fourth and that is the way
they finished as Stambaugh claimed his first heat win.
Phil Gussler took the lead in the sport
stock feature with Ray Muncy in second with Shawn Stansell a close
third. The first caution flew on lap four for debris on the track .
On the restart Stansell passed Muncy on the outside and then set
sail for Gussler. Lap seven saw the caution again, this time Gary
Sites and Chris Boggs spun. Gussler went wide in turn one on the
restart and that was all Stansell needed as he took the lead and
back in the pack fast timer George Lindsey was up to fifth as again
the caution came out for a spin on lap ten. Before a lap was in on
the restart the caution flew as several cars tangled on the
backstretch.
Lindsey was on a mission as he passed Muncy
for third on lap twelve and then went after teammate Gussler as he
reeled him in but Gussler held him off as hey moved closer to leader
Stansell. With four laps to go David Boyle brought the caution out
when he spun. It was a shoot-out for the checker but Boyle again
spun causing a caution. Stansell in his Moore Trucking special held
on for his fifth win of the year as Gussler was second with Lindsey
third followed by Muncy, and Jeff Marsh.
Phil Gussler and Jeff Marsh set the pace in
the first sport stock heat with Gussler taking the lead. Sixth place
starter Shawn /Stansell moved into third but fast timer George
Lindsey was on the move charging toward the front but on the last
lap John Haney made a charge to take fourth. For Gussler it was his
first Kil-Kare heat win as Stansell, Marsh, and Haney rounded out
the top four.
Derrick Louderback took the lead in the
second heat with fourth place starter Mike South Sr. taking second
as front row starter David Boyle was riding third. When the checker
waved it was Louderback claiming his first heat win of the year with
South second followed by Boyle and Gary Sites.
Rounding out the nights program was the
wild compacts with Rodney Terry and Joe Hoelscher leading the pack.
Terry got the lead but it was short lived as Bo Hoelscher took the
lead with Ron Sagers advancing to second to challenge Hoelscher with
fast timer Bryan Lynch riding third, Traffic was heavy back in the
pack for a battle for sixth was brewing between Paul Holey, Amber
Sites, and Joseph Mansfield only to see the caution come out. Bo
Hoelscher and Sagers were both looking for repeat wins as the green
re-appeared with Hoelscher getting a good jump on Sagers and Sites
was on the move as she took fifth from Terry and was moving in on
Davey Shaw as the laps were rounding down. Hoelscher maintained the
lead for his second win of the year in his Valvoline sponsored car
with Ron Sager second followed by Bryan Lynch, Davey Shaw, and Amber
Sites.
