Independence Day Championships
Xenia, OH (7/3) - Kil-Kare Speedway
celebrated the Fourth of July weekend with championship events in
the late model and modified divisions with 50 lap features
highlighting the program. Mike Stacy claimed the late mode feature
while Jason Mahaffey the modified, Ray Muncy the sport stock, and Bo
Hoelscher the compact.
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late
models were led to the green by Jeff Marsh and Virgil Powell for
their $1,200 to win feature. Powell had a slight lead over Marsh at
the start but Marsh took over with Mike Stacy right behind him with
Tim Rauch in third and two time winner Scott Drake in fourth
followed by Don Mahaffey. Stacy slipped under Marsh on lap six for
the lead as Drake moved into third. Rauch bobbled on turn four and
Drake, Mahaffey, Bobby Justus and Justin Alsip all slipped by as
Rauch faded.
Stacy had a good lead by lap twenty as fast
time Ricky Bates was up to sixth. At the halfway it was still
Mahaffey followed by Drake, Mahaffey, Justus, and Alsip. Bates and
Alsip battled side by side for fifth as Alsip took the spot and then
was after fourth place running Justus. The first caution came out on
lap thirty-five which saw Alsip sent to the tail for the restart. As
the laps wound down it was still Stacy in the Oakley blacktop
machine out front by about fifteen car lengths as Drake had his
hands full holding off Mahaffey who was trying to figure a way
around Drake. Justus experienced mechanical problems, slowing off
the pace and departing to the pits. The caution came out when Virgil
Powell and Jamie Sites tangled with two laps to go.
Stacy held on after the restart to stay in
front to claim the $1,200 followed by Scott Drake, Don Mahaffey,
Ricky Bates, and Sam Heckman. Bates added an extra $500 to his
winnings compliments of Airway Construction for being the hard
charger.
Scott Drake and Sloan Henderson started on
the front row of the first heat of late models. Drake took the lead
looking for his second heat with Don Mahaffey right on his tail and
then slipped under Drake for the lead as Henderson slipped under
Drake for second as did Justin Alsip and that is the way they
crossed the finish line with Drake fourth. Double duty driver Jeff
Marsh and Virgil Powell led the field in the second heat with Marsh
taking the lead followed by Mike Stacy with Tim Rauch third with Sam
Heckman trying Rauch to no avail. When the checker waved it was
Marsh taking his first heat win trailed by Stacy, Rauch, and
Heckman.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds
faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag for their fifty lap
feature with Joe Jennings and Jamie Brenneman in the front row only
to see the caution fly as Brenneman spun on the frontstretch. Once
underway it was Brenneman taking the lead as the field battled
feverishly behind her and all of a sudden she came to a halt on turn
four bringing out the caution. Jennings had the lead after the
restart only to have Jason Mahaffey who started sixth steal it from
him. Ralph Harrod took over second with Mike Carroll in third with
Jack Jones fourth. Dick Dunlevy was coming from the tail moving into
fifth.
Mahaffey continued to set sail as Carroll
tried the outside of Harrods, taking second on lap eleven. Jones
then passed Harrods with Dun in tow. At the halfway it was Mahaffey,
Carroll, Jones, Dunlevy, and Harrods. Carroll was inching closer and
closer to leader Mahaffey each lap as Dunlevy slipped under Jones on
lap thirty four for third and then worked towards the two front
runners.
With four laps to go the caution came out
as Jerry Stapleton and Jack Jones tangled on the front. setting up a
shootout for the finish as both Carroll and Dunlevy was right up
with Mahaffey. Stapleton slipped past Dunlevy for third as Mahaffey
in his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored car claimed his biggest win
of his career as he picked up the $1,200 first place money while the
pass by Stapleton was worth the $500 hard charger compliments of
Gutters 2 Go. Mike Carroll was second followed by Jerry Stapleton,
Dick Dunlevy, and Shane Shirk.
Leading the pack to the green in the first
modified heat it was Jack Jones and Jason Mahaffey with Jones taking
the lead with Derek Barnette sneaking into second with Mahaffey
third. Jones claimed his second heat win of the year with Barnette
second, Mahaffey third, and Dick Dunlevy fourth. It was Joe Jennings
and Rodney Kreusch in the front row of the second heat with Jennings
taking the lead with Ralph Harrod taking second but Jennings went
wide on turn one enabling Harrod to slip under him for the lead and
win with Shane Shirk coming from the tail for second with Jamie
Brenneman third and Kreusch fourth but Kreusch was disqualified when
he drove into Shirk after the event doing heavy damage to Shirks
machine.
The sport stocks hit the track for twenty
laps of racing with Mike South Sr. and Heat winner Ray Muncy on the
front row. South took the lead as Muncy bobbled on turn one but the
caution came out as Shawn Stansell spun making a complete restart
necessary, Muncy took the lead with South second but back in the
pack Shawn Stansell and on Lewis was on the move as they advanced up
behind second place running South. Stansell moved alongside of South
to take second followed by Lewis. the caution came out on lap nine
as Travis Digges and South tangled on turn three with heavy damage
to Digges.
Muncy was still in the lead on the restart
as Stansell went to work on Muncy, sizing him up for a pass as he
tried the inside but Muncy shut the door. Lewis then closed in on
the leaders as they ran bumper to bumper when Muncy and Stansell
made contact on the frontstretch with Stansell sent to the tail.
Muncy maintained the lead on the restart for his first win of the
year with Lewis second, Jeff Marsh third, John Haney fourth and
Derrick Louderback fifth.
Former compact driver Chris Boggs and John
Haney started in the front row of the street stock first heat with
Boggs taking the lead with Derrick Louderback second to take his
first heat win with Louderback second trailed by fast timer Travis
Digges and Shawn Stansell. Mike South Sr. and Ray Muncy started on
the front row of the second heat with Muncy surging into the lead
followed by South, Will Gregory and David Boyle and that is the way
they finished as Muncy also claimed his first heat win.
It was Mike Israel and Matt Stone leading
the field to the green in the compact feature that got off to a
rocky start as several cars mixed it up on the backstretch just
after the green appeared. Again right after the green appeared
another mix-up happened on the backstretch. Stone had the lead as Bo
Hoelscher was on the move as he sailed to the front on lap five for
the lead. Ron Sagers was on the move from the tail to take second on
lap seven. Hoelscher continued to lead as several cars mixed it up
on turn four with Paul Holley Davey Shaw loosing a bumper bringing
out the caution. It was a shoot out between Hoelscher and Sagers as
Hoelscher held on to claim his first heat win of the year . Second
was Ron Sagers followed by Joshua Spriggs, Amber Sites, Davey Shaw.
