Mahaffey and Jones Claim Kil-Kare Features

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (7/31) - It was a full night of activity at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night with double features in all divisions plus the touring IKO Mini Cup series were also a part of the program and the admission price for the fans was a bargain as there was no increase for this busy night.

The first feature of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models saw Jeff Marsh and Shawn Sparkman starting in the front row as they faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag. Marsh in his new car took the lead as third place starter Bobby Justus took second but Don Mahaffey stole second when the caution came out when Tim Rauch hit the backstretch wall. Marsh again held the lead but Mahaffey slipped by him with Justus taking second followed by Justin Alsip and Sloan Henderson. Mahaffey enjoyed a good sized lead when the tail end running Marsh and Sparkman made contact causing a caution.

With nineteen laps to go Mahaffey was seeking his second win of the year but he had a hungry field behind him on the restart but like a jack rabbit he again took sail. Justus slipped a little on turn four and then the next lap Henderson spun on turn four while running fourth and was out with mechanical problems. Alsip then made a run on Justus, taking the spot as Sam Heckman then got around Justus dropping him back to fourth with Scott Drake fifth. Back in the pack tenth place starter Mike Stacy was on the move as he passed Drake for fifth and then moved on the outside of Justus. As the checker waved it was Mahaffey scoring his second win in the Oakley Blacktop special trailed by Alsip, Heckman, Justus, and Drake.

Ricky Bates and Kyle Jones made up the front row of the second late model feature with Jones taking the early lead with Bates second followed by Scott Drake, Sam Heckman, and first feature winner Don Mahaffey. Jamie Sites slowed the event when he spun on the frontstretch on the sixth lap. Jones pulled away from the field leaving Bates riding second and Drake third. Don Mahaffey kept trying to pass Heckman and was saved when Sloan Henderson brought the caution out on lap fifteen when she stopped on the frontstretch.

After the restart Mike Stacy passed Justin Alsip for sixth and then went after teammate Mahaffey which he passed and then passed Heckman and Scott Drake was his next victim as Stacy took third with five laps to go. Alsip also advanced as he passed Heckman and then Drake but Drake shook him off as the checker fell on Jones for his first win of the year in the Valley View Chiropractic car. Second was Bates followed by Stacy, Drake, and Alsip.

The first of two Muffler Brothers of Xenia modified features found Rodney Kreusch and Joe Jennings in the front row with Kreusch in the lead and fifth place starter Caleb Reschar into second with eighth place starter Mike Carroll moving into third and then he passed Reschar and Kreusch both on the outside to take the lead. Jack Jones was up to fourth but fast timer Dick Dunlevy slipped under him to advance to second as Carroll had a big lead. That lead was shortened when Ryan Dunlevy and Joe Jennings tangled on the backstretch bringing out the caution with Grant Gamble also spinning.

For the restart it was the two former track champs Mike Carroll and Dick Dunlevy running one and two with another veteran, Jerry Stapleton riding third with second generation driver Jason Mahaffey fourth and Rodney Kreusch fifth. Carroll set the pace but Dunlevy was on his rear bumper as Carroll held off his challenges with Stapleton moving up on the two front runners. Dunlevy tried the outside but failed as the white flag came out with Carroll taking his third win in the Storco construction machine with Dunlevy second followed by Stapleton, Jason Mahaffey, and Derek Barnette.

Caleb Reschar and Ralph Harrod were in the front row of the second modified feature as they raced side by side into turn one with Reschar in front by the time they reached the starter stand on the first lap. Derek Barnette was in second with Jerry Stapleton, Mike Carroll and Dick Dunlevy following. Lap three saw the caution come out with Reschar still in front on the restart only to see the caution come out again when Ralph Harrod spun on turn three one lap later. Barnette kept within striking distance as Reschar maintained his lead and it was Stapleton moving up on the two front runners while bak in the pack Jason Mahaffey was holding off the challenges of Dick Dunlevy but Dunlevy was on the move as he passed first feature winner Mike Carroll on lap twenty. Stapleton was next on Dunlevy's list as he tried him for third as the laps wound down. Reschar had his sites on his first feature win of the year and he pulled it off as he claimed the checker followed by Barnette, Stapleton, Dunlevy, and Carroll.

John Haney and Joe Hensel led the pack in the first sport stock feature as Hensel shot into the lead with Haney riding second with former compact driver Chris Boggs third followed by Jeff Marsh and Phil Gussler. Travis Digges brought the caution out on lap six when he spun on turn three. The two Columbus drivers of Hensel and Haney continued to hold the two front spots after the restart while back in the pack George Lindsey was really flying toward the front as he was up to fourth by lap ten from his twelfth place starting spot.

Gussler passed Haney for second and then went after Hensel, passing him on lap fourteen only to see the caution come out with the lineup reverting back to the last completed lap putting Hensel back in front. Lindsey then sailed around for the lead and then here came fast timer Shawn Stansell to take third. Ray Muncy was also moving up as he was up to fifth. Lindsey had a big lead but that was shortened when Bill Ramey spun on turn four causing a caution and the field bunched up. Lindsey in his Bob's Locksmith special had little trouble staying in front for the win, his second, with Stansell second and Hensel third with Muncy fourth and Gussler fifth.

The second sport stock feature had Jeff marsh in the lead at the drop of the green with Ray Muncy and Shawn Stansell right behind. First feature winner George Lindsey like in the first feature was on the prowl as he was in fourth as they ran through slower cars. Lap six saw a mix up on turn four and the caution coming out as the field bunched up for the restart. Stansell tried the inside of Muncy but on the outside Lindsey passed Stansell and then Muncy with leader Marsh in his sights. Lap thirteen proved fatal for Marsh as Lindsey passed him for the lead  but luckily the caution came out with Marsh back in front but Lindsey then took the front spot and was trucking on leaving the field behind. Stansell was working on Marsh for second, doing so with three laps to go and when the checker waved it was Lindsey taking his second feature of the night. Stansell was second followed by marsh, Muncy, and Phil Gussler.

Fifteen compacts signed in and when the first of two features hit the track it was Brian Rauch and Dave Sagers on the front row with Rauch taking the lead as Shane Sparkman battled for second when the caution came out when three cars tangled on turn two of the first lap. Rauch, a former sport stock driver was making his first appearance of the season. Rauch took off in a hurry to stretch out his lead but unfortunately he broke out on his time and back to the tail he went. Sagers inherited the lead with Sparkman, Paul Holley, Joseph Mansfield and Joe Hoelscher in the top five however Mansfield dropped out with mechanical problems. Davey Shaw was giving Holley a run for the money after the restart as they raced side by side lap after lap. Shaw did get second then went after leader Dave Sagers but in traffic he slipped back to about fifth when again the caution came out for a pile up on turn two. With nine laps to go Dave Sagers was looking for his first feature win but fast timer Bryan Lynch foiled that on lap thirteen when he took the lead. Paul Holley and Amber Sites moved up to make it a three car run for second but at the checker but it was Lynch taking his first win of the year with Sagers second followed by Holley, Sites, and Aaron Harshbarger.

Joe Hoelscher and Aaron Harshbarger led the second compact feature to the green as Harshbarger shot into the lead but Hoelscher took over with Amber Sites running second and Harshbarger third while the rest of the pack battled for positions. Hoelscher's lead was short lived as he broke out and was sent to the tail putting Sites in the lead. Fast timer Bryan Lynch was on the move as he was up to third and then went after second place running Harshbarger but he held on to second as Sites continued to lead at the halfway point. Lynch took the lead on lap sixteen and then scored his second win of the night with Sites second, Harshbarger third, Bo Hoelscher fourth and Paul Holley fifth.

Leading the rookie IKO mini cup feature was Bill Day and Amanda Harrison in the front row with Harrison in front only to have Jacob McClay steal the lead with Harrison second and Noah Wenrick riding third. At the checker it was that order with Day fourth.

In the regular IKO mini cup feature Courtney Hannah and Cole Williams led the pack to the green Hannah took the lead with fast timer Bradley Stifler taking second but Williams rebounded for second with Travis Page displacing Stifler as the caution came out as Williams spun on the frontstretch. Hannah continued to set the pace in the Oakley blacktop car with Stifler taking second as he closed in on Hannah and slipped on the inside of her for the lead as did Page for second but Page was sent to the tail for causing a spin. Stifler, who had been fast timer two times kept his large lead to take his first win of the season with Hannah second, Williams third, Matthew Lorance fourth and Travis Page fifth..

Coming up Friday, August 7, will be the second annual Robbie Dean Memorial 94 lap late model feature plus the modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts will be running with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. For information visit www.kilkare.com or contact the track at 937 429-2961.
