Alsip Claims Kil-Kare Feature Win

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (5/22) -  It was a great night for racing Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway with the largest crowd of the season on hand to witness the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series racing action with beautiful weather for a change. However the late model feature turned out to be a nightmare with crashes and red flags.

Former sport stock champ Tom Williams started on the pole of the thirty lap late model feature along with veteran Virgil Powell to face the green flag of starter Mike Stapleton.

Powell took the lead with Williams battling on the inside as the caution came out due to a spin by Jamie Sites and Andy Peterson and when the green unfoiled again with Powell pulling way ahead. Bobby Justus was on the move as he tried to catch Williams for second but sixteen year old Sloan Henderson was giving Justus a run for the money for third as the duo was both after Williams. A hard hit to the turn two wall by Tony Brunke brought the red flag out as a shaken Brunke emerged from his heavily damaged car.

Again on the restart Powell set sail followed by Williams, Henderson, and Justus with Justin Alsip trying to make a move when all heck broke loose on turn four as six cars tangled with Ricky Bates machine landing on top of Don Mahaffey's car. Powell again set sail as Justus moved into second followed by Alsip and previous weeks winner Sam Heckman. Back in the field tail-end restarters Jamie Sites and Sloan Henderson were working their way around cars.

Meanwhile Powell in his Estes Oil car built up nearly a half lap lead as Alsip worked his way into second and then all of a sudden leader Powell spun by himself on turn one giving the lead to Alsip and Powell to the tail. When the checker finally waved it was Alsip in his Performance Clinic sponsored car becoming the first repeat winner as Heckman claimed second followed by Justus, Scott Drake, and Sites.

Shawn Stansell took the lead at the drop of the green in the sport stock feature with previous weeks winner Ron Lewis running second when he was tapped in the rear on turn one by Ray Muncy and Muncy sent to the rear. Lewis resumed his second place spot as tail starter Mike South Sr. advanced to third with fast timer Travis Diggs right behind South. Gary Sites looped on turn four to bring out a caution on lap three.

Stansell continued to lead but Muncy had worked his way into fourth and was knocking on the rear bumper of South for third. Diggs wasn't out of the picture as he was right there trying to catch the front runners. Muncy was into third when the caution appeared on lap ten when Diggs spun on the backstretch. Muncy shot around Lewis on the inside on the restart to claim second and then went to work on leader Stansell as Stansell kept shaking him off. Muncy tried to pass Stansell on the inside as they entered turn one but his move backfired as he spun and Stansell stayed in front with Lewis now back in second  as Stansell took the win in the Rogers Auto Repair sponsored machine with Lewis home second followed by Travis Digges, John Haney, and Chris Boggs.

Ralph Harrod took the lead in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modified main with Jack Jones right behind as Jerry Stapleton ran third with fast timer Dick Dunlevy right behind as the caution came out on lap four when Derek Barnette spun on turn four. Harrod continued to lead as Dunlevy again went to work on Stapleton only to make contact with Stapleton who spun on turn two and Dunlevy darted to the pits only to come back out to restart on the tail. It was a terrific battle for third as Mike Carroll and Greg Stapleton were both working the back of Jerry Stapleton. Meanwhile Barnette was up with the group  to challenge with Caleb Reschar there too.

Jack Jones took the lead dropping Harrod to second with the Stapleton's battling for third but Greg's run fell short with seven laps to go as he ended against the turn two wall after contact with the slower car of Grant Gamble. Jones wasn't about to give up the front spot as he pulled away from second place Harrod as Carroll was trying desperately to get around Jerry Stapleton. At the checker it was Jones claiming his first ever feature win at Kil-Kare as Harrod rode.de home second followed by Jerry Stapleton, Mike Carroll, and Derek Barnette.

The compact feature no more than got underway when the caution waved when a car spun on turn one. Polesetter Tim Haerr and Joseph Mansfield lined back up side by side for the restart as Haerr took the lead with Mansfield passed by Ron Sagers for second as  Bryan Lynch took third with Bo Hoelscher nudging Lynch out of the way for third. Haerr had a good lead as Hoelscher and Sagers battled for second as previous weeks winner  Joe Hoelscher moved in fourth with Amber Sites fifth. With four laps to go Mansfield brought the caution out when he crashed on the frontstretch. Sagers stole the lead on the restart but Haerr bounced back to take the lead and win in his Mahaffey's Auto Salvage sponsored car with Sagers, Hoelscher, and Joe Hoelscher crossing the finish line in that order with Sites fifth.

Kil-Kare will be back in action next Friday night with Memorial Day Championships featuring the late models in a 50 lap feature along with the modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
