Kil-Kare Rain Delayed Features go to Heckman,Carroll,
Lewis, Williams, Hoelscher
By Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (5/15) - After a rain delay after the
first modified heat racing resumed at Kil-Kare
speedway with the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
racing resumed with feature racing only due the
threatening weather conditions in the area,
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds were first
with their 30 lap feature with Mike Carroll and
Ralph Harrod leading the fifteen car field to
starter Mike Stapleton's green flag. Veteran Carroll
in the Paul Storer owned machine took the lead with
Harrod right on his bumper. Fast timer Dick Dunlevy
was riding sixth trying to get around track record
holder Greg Stapleton.
Lap six saw the caution come out when Jason
Mahaffey spun on the frontstretch after being tapped
by Caleb Reschar. Dunlevy slipped on the inside of
Stapleton to take fifth as again the yellow flew on
lap eight when Jason Mahaffey had a problem. Carroll
continued to set the pace with again Harrod on his
bumper in second. Stapleton regained his spot back
from Dunlevy for fifth and again the caution flew
when Tyler Nuckles spun. After the restart it was
still the same running order with Jones third
followed by a three car battle between Jerry
Stapleton, Greg Stapleton and Dunlevy but again the
caution flew on lap nineteen.
After the restart Jack Jones passed Harrod for
second as Greg Stapleton was on the move as he
passed uncle Jerry Stapleton for fourth and then
passed Harrod as he set sail for the leaders.
Dunlevy was also on the move but up front Jones was
challenging Carroll for the lead as he tried the
outside but laps were running out. Carroll took the
win in the Storco Construction machine with Jones
second followed by Greg Stapleton, Dick Dunlevy, and
Ralph Harrod.
The first heat of modifieds had Derek Barnette and
Mike Carroll to the green with Barnette taking the
lead as fireman Ralph Harrod moved into second as
Barnette stayed in front to claim his first win of
the year. Harrod rode home second followed by
Carroll and Jerry Stapleton.
Jamie Brenneman and Joe Jennings paced the field
in the second heat with Brenneman taking the lead
but the caution came out as Brenneman drifted high
forcing Jennings to back off the pace. Jennings took
the lead at the official start only to again have
the caution come out for debris on the track. On the
third attempt Jennings again took the lead as
Brenneman and Mike South Jr. battled for second only
to again see the caution fly when Brenneman made
contact with Jennings with Jennings spinning and
Brenneman heading to the pits with a flat tire. And
then the rains moved in bringing a halt to the
action.
The Kil-Kare sport stocks hit the track next for
their feature with Chris Boggs and Gary Sites
leading the field with former compact driver Boggs
taking the lead but veteran Ron Lewis was on the
move as he took the lead as Boggs slipped off the
track on the backstretch. Fast timer Shawn Stansell
moved into second to challenge Lewis as the two
Rogers Auto Service sponsored cars battled for the
lead. Behind them Mike South Sr. was giving Travis
Diggs a run for the money for third. Lewis continued
to set the pace at the halfway mark as Stansell was
trying to make a run on the outside as Diggs and
South were catching the leaders as Stansell departed
to the pits with mechanical woes. With three laps to
go Gary Sites brought the caution out when he spun
on the frontstretch. After the restart South spun
for another caution. Lewis scored his first win in
many a year as he claimed the 20 lap event over
Travis Diggs, Sites, South, Boggs.
Fifteen late models took to the 3/8ths mile
asphalt with former sport stock driver Tom Williams
and Virgil Powell in the front row leading the field
for their 30 lap feature. Powell took a slight lead
over Williams but Williams charged back to take the
lead with Scott Drake taking second but Powell
slipped back under him as the yellow came out when
Sloan Henderson and Bobby Justus tangled on turn
four. Williams held the lead on the restart followed
by Powell, Ricky Bates, Sam Heckman, and Justin
Alsip. They continued to run in that order until
Bates tapped Powell going into turn four with Powell
spinning and Bates to the tail. This moved Don
Mahaffey into fifth and Tony Brunke sixth. Powell
began closing in on Williams as Alsip slipped under
Heckman but he shook him off as Heckman went to the
outside to pass Powell and then set sail for leader
Williams. Heckman took the lead on lap sixteen only
to see the caution come out when Jamie Sites slipped
off the track on the backstretch. giving the lead
back to Williams.
Unfortunately a deflating right front tire sent
Williams to the pits and put Heckman in the lead
followed by Powell, Alsip, Mahaffey, and Brunke. Cal
Busch brought the caution out on lap nineteen when
he slip off the track on the backstretch. Heckman
continued to set sail as Alsip was nipping at
Powell's rear bumper. Heckman took the win followed
by Powell, Alsip, Mahaffey and Burba but
unfortunately Burba was delegated to the last slot
for failing to report to the scales after the event.
Joe Hoelscher and Davey Shaw paced the compacts to
the green as Hoelscher shot into the lead as Shaw
slid off the track. Bo Hoescher then moved through
the field to move up to challenge Joe for the lead.
eff Kimes and Amber Sites fought for the third spot
with Bryan Lynch funning fifth. The Hoelscher's put
on quite a show for the lead as they ran side by
side and as they came up on slower traffic Joe still
held the lead over Bo. A determined Joe Hoelacher
held on to the lead to take the win in a very action
filled event with Bo Hoelscher second followed by
Amber Sites, Bryan Lynch, Troy Patterson, Jeff Kimes,
Paul Holley, Joseph Mansfield, Ronald Sagers, Dustin
Smith, Davey Shaw, David Sagers.
Cole Williams took the lead in the IKO mini cup
feature with Brett Oakley running secnd followed by
Courtney Hannah as Williams enjoyed a good lead as
Hannah closed the gap on Oakley. After a lap ten
caution Williams continued to set the pace with
Hannah into second. Williams took the win with
Hannah seconde and Oakley a close third.
Action resumes next Friday, May 22, with the
crowd pleasing big school bus Figure-8 and
demolition derby along with a full regular program.
Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
