Justus and Jones Claims Memorial Day Championship at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. -  It was Memorial Day championships Friday night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models and modifieds at Kil-Kare Speedway with $1,000 awaiting the winner of their fifty lap features. And when the final checkers fell it was Jack Jones the modified winner and Bobby Justus the late model winner.
Leading the late models in their feature was front row starters Virgil Powell and Jamie Sites Powell took command just like he did the previous week with Bobby Justus up to second with Sloan Henderson in third only to spin on turn two to bring out the caution putting her on the tail for the restart. Powell kept his Estes Oil car in front with Justus only a few feet behind in second with Sam Heckman in third and Sites fourth with fast timer Don Mahaffey fifth. Heckman was closing in on the top two  as he moved up behind Justus with Mahaffey slipping around Sites for fourth as Justin Alsip also passed Sites to take the fifth position as Scott Drake also dropped Sites back a spot.
Mike Stacy spun on turn four on lap eighteen after being nudged by Henderson with Henderson again to the tail. Powell again set sail  but on lap twenty seven he dropped off the pace giving the lead to Justus. with Justus in the lead Alsip moved up alongside Justus with Sam Heckman on the inside and then there was contact between Alsip, Heckman and Mahaffey with Mahaffey smacking the turn two wall and out of action after which Henderson headed to the pits.
With eighteen laps to go it was Justus, Drake, Mike Stacy, Sites, and Jeff Marsh as Heckman and Alsip were sent to the tail and Henderson returned for the restart. Justus held the lead on the restart with Drake right behind but Justus kept shaking him off with Stacy riding third while Sam Heckman had moved up to challenge Jamie Sites for fourth. Stacy kept moving up on the two front runners  with Drake again trying Justus with a little contact but Justus stayed in front as Sites dropped out.  the last lap was a humdinger as Drake tried to get Justus but it was Justus in his M& D Auto Sales claiming his first feature win of the year and the $1,000 top prize. Drake was second followed by Stacy, Heckman, and Sloan Henderson.
Bobby Justus and Sam Heckman were the front row starters in the first late model heat as they ran side by side with Justus showing as the leader on lap two. Sloan Henderson joined the top two as she rode a very close third but it was Justus taking the win followed by Heckman, Henderson and Justin Alsip.
The second late model heat saw Jeff Marsh and Mike Stacy in the front row with Stacy wasting little time to take the lead as Virgil Powell shot up to challenge Stacy as he tried the inside groove but Stacy closed the door but here came Scott Drake to chase the leaders. Bumper to bumper they were as the checker flew with Stacy taking his first win of the year with Powell second, Drake third, and Marsh fourth.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds saw sixteen cars make the call for their $1,000 to win fifty lap Memorial Day championship feature that was paced by previous weeks winner Jack Jones and heat winner Ralph Harrod. Jones held a slight lead on the first lap with Harrod right on his rear bumper with Derek Barnette as seventh place starter Mike Carroll was up to fourth when the first caution came out on lap three when Jason Mahaffey and Caleb Reschar make contact with Rescher spinning. Carroll then set sail fore Barnette as they fought for third as Jones continued to set the pace. Carroll started to fade as Jerry Stapleton moved into third followed by Kyle Jones.
At the half way marker it was Jack Jones, Harrod, Barnette, Jerry Stapleton, and Greg Stapleton  with Nuckles and Dick Dunlevy right behind. Lap twenty eight saw the second caution fly when Kyle Jones spun on turn four. Jack Jones again set the pace on the restart as again Harrod stayed glued to his rear bumper. Kyle Jones spun again on turn four on lap thirty five to bring out another caution. After the restart Greg Stapleton was challenging his uncle for fourth as they rode side by side lap after lap as Jack Jones still set the pace. Tyler Nuckles slipped inside of Greg to challenge Jerry when contact was made with Nuckles going sideways and Jerry Stapleton spinning.
With seven laps to go it was Jack Jones, Ralph harrod, Derek Barnette, Jerry Stapleton and Geg Stapleton in the top five. As the laps wore down Jones was not going to give up to Harrod as they crossed the line in that order as Jones claimed his second win in a row in his Automotive machine Shop sponsored machine. Harrod was second followed by Barnette, Jerry Stapleton, and Greg Stapleton.
Leading the pack in the first modified heat was front row starters Ralph Harrod and Derek Barnette with Harrod taking the lead followed by Barnette and fast timer Kyle Jones. Tyler Nuckles was on the move from the back as he moved forward to challenge Barnette for second but it was Barnette by a whisker at the checker with Nuckles third and  Greg Stapleton fourth as Harrod claimed his first heat win of the year.
Grant Gamble and Mike South Jr. led the field in the second heat with South taking command and fast moving David Carter shooting up to second and took the lead from South on lap three. Tail end starter Caleb Reschar moved up on South's bumper and almost got South as Carter claimed his first Kil-Kare heat win with South second, Reschar third and Jason Mahaffey fourth.
Travis Digges shot into the lead at the drop of the green in the sport stock main but the caution came out for a restart and then on the next green Shawn Stansell and Digges got together on the backstretch  bringing the caution back out for another complete restart. Perhaps the third time would be the charm needed to get things underway and it was as fast timer Stansell took command and started to pull away form the field as Mike south Sr. was running secnd being challenged by Ron Lewis with Gary Sites riding fourth and Chris Boggs fifth. In the meantime Stansell was really setting sail as he was half a lap ahead of the second and third place cars. Lewis finally edged ahead of South by half a car but South rebelled by putting a stake on second as again Lewis tried to get him. Meanwhile Stansell and his Rogers Auto Repair special as Lewis claimed second when South caught up by a lapped car but still managed to finish third followed by Sites, and Boggs.
Fourteen compacts faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag for the start of their twenty lap feature with David Sagers and Jeff Kimes in the front row. Kimes showed as the leader but the caution came out as three cars tangled on turn one to bring out the caution which called for a complete restart with Davey Shaw and Joseph Mansfield heading to the pits.
The restart didn't last very long as Paul Holley spun on turn one, hitting the marker tire for another complete restart. Sagers took the lead with Kimes on the outside with Joe Hoelscher moving up on the inside to take second followed by Bo Hoelscher. Sagers led as the Hoelscher's raced side by side with Bo moving to the outside and stealing the lead on lap severn as Aaron Harshbarger was up to third. Harshbarger claimed second on lap ten with Joe Hoelscher in fourth with bo challening him. Bryan Lynch was on the move as he advanced to fifth as the caution came out as Bo Hoelscher headed to the pits.
Ron Sagers had the front spot on the restart with Harshbarger challenging Sagers for the lead but it was Ron Sagers caliming his third feature of the year with Harshbarger real close in second followed by David Sagers, Bryan Lynch, and Amber Sites.
Kil-Kare Speedway will be back in action next Friday night featuring the powerful super late models of the Main Event Series along with the modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
