Kil-Kare Openers Go To Stacy, Stapleton, Lewis, and Lynch
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (4/2) - It was opening night Friday at Kil-Kare Speedway for
the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and when the final checkers fell
it was Mike Stacy, Greg Stapleton, Ron Lewis, and Bryan Lynch claiming
feature wins.
The Sonic Drive In Late Models took to the track for their first
feature of the season with defending NASCAR All American Series Kil-Kare
champion Justin Alsip on the pole and former champ Sam Heckman
alongside. Alsip wasted no time in taking the lead as Sloan ahenderson
challenged Heckman for second but Heckman held on riding alongside of
her and finally took second as Heckman dropped back but here came Mike
Stacy on the on the inside for third as fast timer and new track record
holder Don Mahaffey coming from seventh for fourth. Alsip in his
Charlie's A-1 Auto Body special held a good lead at the twelve lap point
with Henderson still second as the caution flew as weveral cars tangled
on turn four.
Alsip continued to set the pace on the restart as Mahaffey whizzed
into second with Stacy trailing for third as henderson dropped to fourth
with Heckman riding fifth. Mahaffey started to cut the gap on leader
Alsip as the Oakley blacktop sponsored car was on Alsip's bumper on lap
twenty one. Mahaffey tried desperately to pass on the inide as they made
contact on lap twenty four on turn two as both spun into the infield.
Mahaffey was sent to the tail with Alsip retaining the front spot for
the restart and now he had second fast timer Mike stacy on his tail.
Stacy nudged his way under Alsip on turn four for the lead as Alsip
tried to make a comeback as the white waved but it was Stacy in his
Oakley Blacktop special taking the win followed by Alsip, Henderson,
Heckman, and Shawn Gray.
Veteran Sam Heckman and second year driver Sloan Henderson set the pace
in the first late model heat wiith Heckman taking the lead as third
place starter Gary Estes took the front marker on the second lap with
second fast qualifier Mike Stacy coming from the back row for second. At
the checker it was Estes in the Bond Machine taking the checker over
Stacy, Heckman, and Henderson.
The second heat had Jeff Marsh and veteran Russ Bobb in the front row
with Bobb edging Marsh for the lead with Bobby Justus slipping into
second to challenge Bobb, taking the lead on lap two. On the move was
last place starter Justin Alsip as he passed Bobb for second on lap six.
Justus took the win with Alsip second, Bobb third, and Marsh fourth.
Defending track champion Mike Carroll and Bill Burba led the sixteen
car modified field to to the green in their thirty lap feature with
rookie Ryan Fleming starting third with veteran Jerry Stapleton fourth.
When starter Mike Stapleton waved the green flag Carroll took the lead
with Fleming challenging Burba for second but Burba went to the high
side to take second with Fleming right in the thick of the veterans.
Action was slowed on lap four when Brian Brewer spun on the
backstretch. Carroll stayed in front but sixth place starter Kyle Jones
charged into second as the two first cars started to pull away from the
field.
Meanwhile it was a battle for positions behind them until five cars
tangled on turn four with Fleming being sidelined when he hit the
guardrail and lost a wheel. Also sidelined was Caleb Reschar. Jones put
the pressure on carroll whil behind them new track record holder Greg
Stapleton was chasing his uncle Jerry Stapleton for fourth while Derek
Barnette rode fifth. Greg took third at the halfway marker and started
to move in on the top two cars. Meanwhile Jones was tapping Carroll's
back bumper, moving to the outside and now it was a three car battle for
the lead but contact was made between Jones and Carroll as they spun on
the backstretch bringing out the caution.
Carroll departed to the pits and Jones was sent to the tail which now
put Greg Stapleton in the lead. Brian Reeser slipped around Jason
Mahaffey for fifth as he chased rookie Brandon Oakley. Greg Stapleton
pulled away from his uncle who was riding second and Derek Barnette
third as the checker waved on the Underwood Vinyle and Tile sponsored
Greg Stapleton machine. Second was Jerry Staapleton followed by Derek
Barnette, Brian Reeser, and Brandon Oakley..
Brian Reeser and Jamie Sites paced the field in the first modified
heat with Reser taking the lead only to see the caution fly as Jerry
Stapleton slid into the infield on turn two. Reeser held the front spot
on the restart with Sites second and defending track champ Mike Carroll
third with Bill Burba fourth. Carroll made a daring move on the inside
of Reeser on turn two to steal the lead and win with Burba seceond
followed by Reeser and Sites.
Brian Brewer and Chris Jennings set the pace in the second heat with
Brewer getting the lead as Derrek Barnette was on the move to show as
the leader on the third lap. Caleb Reschar was all over the back of
Brewer tring to get around as they battled for second but it was Brewer
holding off Reschar as Barnette took the win followed by Brewer, Reschar,
and Brandon Oakley.
Ron Lewis and Jamie Sites led the sport stocks to the green in their
twenty five lap feature with the two running side by side for the lead
as Lewis nudged ahead to lead while Travis digges rode third and James
harding was running fourth. harding went to the outside of Digges for
third with fast timer Shawn stanseell a close fifth. Lewis stayed in
front but here came Stansell now into third as he closed in on Sites and
Lewis with Harding a close fourth. Stansell went on the inside to pass
Sites for second on lap sixteen as the defending track champ had his
eyes on leader Lewis. Lewis had his hands full holding off Stansell as
the white flag waved and when the checker flew it was Lewis in his
Replacement Auto Parts Camaro taking the win over Stansell, Sites,
Harding and Digges.
Travis Digges jumped into the lead at the start of the sport stock heat
as James harding and Phil Gussler battled for second. Harding finally
stole second as new track record holder Shawn Stansell was on the move
taking third and that is the way they crossed the stripe, Digges,
Harding, Stansell, Gussler.
Joe Hensel and Jay Lakins led the field to the green in the second
sport stock heat as the second generation driver Lakins took the lead
with Hensel not giving up as he pulled along side of Lakins and took the
lead as Lakins faded with Hensel taking the win followed by Ron Lewis,
Jamie Sites, and Lakins.
Rounding out the nights action was the compacts with Paul Holley
jumping into the lead only to see the caution flay after one lap when
Tyler Mahaffey spun. Holley led on the restart with Bryan Lynch riding
second and then taking the lead on lap four with Joe Hoelscher snaring
second with Amber Sites third and being challenged by fast timer Tim
Haerr. Lynch still held the lead at the halfway mark with Hoelscher
still second as Sites had her hands full trying to hold off Haerr who
challenged on the outside making the pass on lap sixteen for third. When
the checker waved it was Lynch claiming the win with Haerr second
followed by Joe Hoelscher, Amber Sites, and Bo Hoelscher.
