Brandon Oakley Claims Robbie Dean 94
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh. - When the checker flag waved at the conclusion of 94 laps in the Annual Robbie Dean Memorial feature Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway it was rookie late model driver Brandon Oakley winning the prestigious event on USG night. The NASCAR sanctioned NASCAR All-American Series/USG night had seventeen cars start the featured event which had Ricky Bates and Justin Alsip on the front row of the field. At the drop of the green Bates took the lead followed by Alsip and Don Mahaffey. Mahaffey nosed on the inside of Alsip on lap five as they ran side by side with Dick Dunlevy and Travis Braden right behind. Bates shook Alsip him off as the trio battled. Bates held his line but Alsip was determined as they went three wide on turn three with Mahaffey coming out front with Dunlevy and Braden following. Mahaffey had the lead with Braden right beside him but as they ran hard a little contact was made on the backstretch bringing out the caution. Both were sent to the tail and as Dunlevy was involved in the mixup he had damage but was able to make repairs and return. Ricky Bates got caught up also and received heavy damage and was out. Bob Sibila found himself in the lead for the restart followed by Brandon Oakley, Justin Alsip, Sam Heckman and Terry Humphrey. The green flag came back out on lap twenty two and back in the field David Carter was on the move as he and Dunlevy were battling when Dunlevy spun bringing out the caution.. Before they could complete a lap Carter tapped Dunlevy on turn one with Dunlevy spinning and Carter sent back. Sibila continued to set the pace with Oakley running second and Alsip third. Behind Oakley and Braden Mahaffey was moving up. At lap fifty it was Sibila, Oakley, Braden, Mahaffey and Carter. Sibila moved around traffic as he held the front spot with Oakley not far behind when the caution came out on lap sixty four. Mahaffey tried to get Braden on the restart but Braden pulled away and went after second place running Oakley. Oakley was movi ng closer to leader Sibilia as Braden inched closer to Oakley. With ten laps to go Sibilia really had the pressure on him with Oakley and Braden right behind but all of a sudden Braden slowed and dropped out leaving Sibilia and Oakley one and two with Mahaffey and Carter right behind and Alsip fifth. With just a few laps to go young Oakley was sizing up Sibilia and it was paying off as the two came of of turn four for the checker. It was a very disappointing finish for Sibilia as Oakley came on strong out of turn four to barely nip Sibilia at the line for the win in the Oakley Blacktop special. With Sibilia second Don Mahaffey was home third followed by David Carter and Justin Alsip. Hitting the track for the first heat of late models which saw Brandon Oakley and Justin Alsip in the front row with Oakley out front with Alsip in hot pursuit. Oakley took the win with Alsip second trailed by Bob Sibla Jr., and Dick Dunlevy Jr. Ray Muncy claimed the second heat, taking the win over Terry Humphrey, Russ Bobb, and Sam Heckman. It was twenty-five laps to go in the sport stock feature with Bill Ramey and Rodney Roush in the front row with Ramey in the lead while Jeremy English and Jamie Sites were on the move. Sites flew around Ramey to take the lead with Ramey riding second with Mike South Jr. and Roush getting around him. Sites had a good lead at the halfway mark but back in the field Shawn Stansell was coming up, challenging Roush for third which he did take. All was going well until English spun on lap eighteen slowing the field. Sites was challenged on the restart by South but Sites held on to the lead as the laps wound down and it was Sites taking the win in the Commercial Roofing special. Mike South Jr. was second with Shawn Stansell third, Rodney Roush fourth and Bill Ramey fifth. Jamie Sites and Phil Gussler Jr was in the front row of the first sport stock heat with Sites taking the lead followed by Joe Hensel and fast timer Travis Digges. The first three were bumper to bumper when the checker waved as Sites claimed the win with Hensel second trailed by Digges and Shawn Stansell. It was previous weeks feature winner Tyler Mahaffey and Courtney Hannah in the front row of the second heat. Mahaffey took the lead with Bill Ramey chasing but also chasing was Rodney Roush as he moved into third with Hannah running fourth. Mahaffey took the win with Ramey a close second with Rodney Roush third and Courtney Hannah fourth. Jerry Stapleton jumped into the lead at the start of the modified feature only to see the caution come out when Derek Weatherhead spun on turn two after contact by Caleb Reschar making for a complete restart and Reschar sent to the tail. Stapleton again shot out front with Daryl McKay riding second and Caleb Reschar right behind with Ryan Fleming chasing him along with Mike Carroll. Carroll took the high groove as he challenged Ryan Fleming when the yellow flew when John Donovan and Kyle Jones tangled on the frontstretch. Jerry Stapleton continued to set the pace and again Carroll went to the outside and again the yellow flew when Daryl McKay spun after being tapped by Caleb Reschar who was sent to the tail. Jerry Stapleton was still the leader with McKay second but here came Carroll and fast timer Greg Stapleton in hot pursuit. Ryan Fleming went to the outside of Jerry Stapleton, trying to pass with Greg Stapleton and Mike Carroll right on their bumpers. The four cars ran as if in a fast car dash as young Fleming took the lead on lap twenty-one. Fleming had two hungry drivers on his tail as the five lap signal was given. Carroll took the lead with three laps to go as Stapleton moved into second in a very exciting finish. Carroll took his third win in his McDonalds special with Greg Stapleton a very very close second. Ryan Fleming did a great job taking third place money with Jason Mahaffey fourth and Jerry Stapleton fifth. The first heat of modifieds had Donald Parsons Jr. and Caleb Rescher in the front row with Reschar taking the lead and being chased by Mike Carroll with Parsons third and Tyler Nuckles fourth. When the checker waved it was Reschar, Carroll, Parsons, and Greg Stapleton. John Donovan and Rob Dutra set the pace in the second modifiesd heat and when the green waved Donovan took the lead with Jerry Stapleton in second and Kyle Jones in third and challenging Stapleton. Side by side they ran but when the checker waved it was Donovan claiming his first heat win with Jones second followed by Jerry Stapleton and Daryl McKay. The compacts faced twenty laps with Ivan Fugate and Carroll Nease in the front row of their feature with Fugate in front as the cars behind them went three wide. Gary Williams emerged as the leader on lap twp with heat winner Bo Hoelscher taking command on lap four and fast timer Matt Stone challenging Williams. Stone took second and set out after leader Hoelscher. Further back Joe Hoelscher was riding fourth with Fugate fifth with Ron Sagers and Bryan Lynch both challenging him for fifth. Bo Hoelscher built up a good lead and when the checker waved it was Bo Hoelscher taking his sixth feature win and also picked up a bonus of $100 from Oakley Blacktop as he was a repeat winner on Robbie Dean night, having taken the win last year. Second was Matt Stone followed by Gary Williams, Ron Sagers, and Bryan Lynch. Gary Williams and Joe Hoelscher led the field to the green in the compact first heat. Williams in the Affordable Auto Parts special jumped into the lead but it was Hoelscher taking the lead with son Bo Hoelscher moving into second followed by fast timer Matt Stone. Bo took the lead as Stone stole second but Joe Hoelscher charged right back then Stone took second at the checker as Bo Hoelscher took the win with Stone second. Bryan Lynch was third and Joe Hoelscher fourth. Steve Barnhart and Jess Drook were the leaders in the second heat with Ron Sagers in pursuit as Barnhart dropped back to third. Sagers closed in on Drook and slid inside to take the lead while Davey Shaw stole third from Barnhart. Sagers took the win with Drook second, Shaw third and Barnhart fourth.
