Braden Takes Sixth Kil-Kare Win

 by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - Travis Braden claimed his sixth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway and rookie sport stock driver Tyler Mahaffey claimed his first feature win. And then the rain took over the facility forcing the modified and compact features to be postponed until next week.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models had thirty laps to go with veteran Russ Bobb and Tony Brunke in the front row. Bobb broke into the lead as the pack came chasing with Travis Braden and Don Mahaffey after Bobb. Mahaffey took the lead and then Braden nudged under Mahaffey to take the lead. Braden put some distance over Mahaffey.  Another veteran was on the move with Dick Dunlevy shooting up to third as he tried to catch Mahaffey. Behind Dunlevy Bob Sibila came from the tail to fourth with Sam Heckman riding fifth.

Braden was simply untouchable as he continued to put more distance over Mahaffey with Dunlevy catching Mahaffey in traffic. Braden lapped the fifth place car when the checker waved to claim his sixth feature win in the Gary Estes owned Weiler Welding sponsored machine. Don Mahaffey Jr. was second with Dick Dunlevy third. Fourth was Bob Sibila and Sam Heckman was fifth.

Ryan Fleming took off like a rocket in the modified fast car dash to take the lead with veteran Bill Burba right behind him and that is the way they finished with fast timer Derek Weatherhead third and Tyler Nuckles fourth.

Six modifieds started the heat event for the modifieds that had Rob Dutra and John Donovan in the front row. Dutra got the jump to take the lead with Caleb Rescher riding second with Jerry Stapleton being chased by Shane Shirk for third. Reschar slipped on the inside of Dutra to steal the lead and win while Dutra was second with Stapleton thied and Shirk fourth.

The  sport stock feature faced twenty five racing laps with Tyler Mahaffey and Courtney Hannah in the front row.  Mahaffey took the lead with Hannah dropping in behind with heat winner Steve Snapp riding third. Last weeks winner Shawn Stansell was riding fourth with Jamie Sites and Travis Digges on his rear bumper. Hannah tried the outside lane to cartch the leader Mahaffey with Snapp right behind her but Mahaffey kept shaking the challenger off.

Lap thirteen proved unlucky for David Boyle as he looped it on turn four on lap thirteen. Hannah continued her challenge when the green came back out but Boyle tested turn two with a spin to bring out the second caution. Hannah still was trying to figure out a way around leader Mahaffey while back behind her Snapp had his hands full holding off fast timer Jamie Sites who stole third on lap twenty. Hannah  was trying her best to pass Mahaffey as she tried to dive inside of him but unfortunately made contact with Mahaffey spinning and Hannah sent to the tail.

Mahaffey now had Sites working the outside as the laps wound down and it was rookie Tyler Mahaffey claiming his first sport stock feature win. Sites was a very close second and like a true gentleman congratulated Mahaffey at the finish line.

ShawnStansell claimed third with Travis Digges fourth and Steve Snapp fifth.

Sport stock fast timer Jamie Sites followed Travis Digges and Shawn Stansell to the green in the fast car dash and when the checker waved it was Digges taking his first dash win in the Peabody Sports special with Sites second and Stansell third.

Seven sport stocks started the first heat with Rodney Roush taking the lead with David Boyle trying the outside. A man on the move was Steve Snapp in his new Chevelle as he moved into third and challenged Mike South Jr. who was running second at that time. It was a super exciting finish as Steve Snapp came from the tail to barely take the win with over Roush at the line with Courtney Hannah home third and South fourth.

The rain did let up enough that the tradk could for the first time in history run the trailer race of destruction on a wet track and the fans loved it. When the action wound down and the last three running vehicles were stopped on the frontstretch it was Craig Edwards who was declared the winner and the receipent of the hardest hit award.

Kil-Kare will be back in action next Friday, August 5, with the running of the Robbie Dean 94, a 94 lap late model feature with the modifies, sport stocks, and compacts also on the card. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
