Veteran Justus Takes Kil-Kare Win

 by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. -  Longtime driver Bobby Justus captured the thirty lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series late model feature Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway as he held off second place finisher Tony Brunke.

Former track champ Mike Carroll claimed the modified feature while Travis Braden took top honors in the FAST Legend cars, Mike South Jr. his third win of the year in the sport stocks and Bo Hoelscher took his fourth compact feature.

Taking to the track for the first feature of the night was the NASCAR Whelen All American Series late models with veteran Columbus driver Bobby Justus on the pole with Tony Brunke alongside. Justus pulled ahead of Brunke with Sam Heckman riding third. Back in the pack fourth fast qualifier Don Mahaffey was working his way toward the front followed by fast timer Travis Braden when on lap thirteen when Dick Dunlevy spun on turn one, Mahaffey clipped him and Shawn Stansell also caught got caught up in the meelee, striking the turn two wall head on. Stansell was ok with his car and Mahaffey were eliminated.

The restart had Justus leading followed by Brunke, Heckman, Brandon Oakley and second fast timer Bob Sibila. Sibila went to work on Oakley as they ran side by side with Oakley having a clear shot on third place Heckman, Oakley made his pass good on lap eighteen and then sized up Brunke. On the move was previous weeks winner Braden who moved on the inside of Sibila as the laps wound down.

Justus had a car lenghth lead as Brunke was putting the pressure on him and back in the pack came Dunlevy who had worked up to sixth as the white flag came out.

Bobby Justus claimed his first feature of the year in his Woody Fox Bail Bond machine for a very emotinal win with his crew on the frontstretch. Tony Brunke was second followed by Brandon Oakley, Bob Sibila, and Travis Braden.

Rodney Kreusch and Derek Weatherhead led the field to the green in the modifieds with Weatherhead jumping out front with Jim Lewis up to second and Jason Mahaffey third. Mahaffey advanced on Lewis to take second but then Lewis found himself the leader when Weatherhead broke out and was sent to the tail. With Lewis the leader and Mahaffey second Mike Carroll was now in third spot as the green flew again.

Carroll shot inside of Mahaffey on turn four with the caution coming out shortly thereafter as Brad Williams, Rodney Kreusch and Mark Timmerman tangled with Williams pitted as well as Timmerman and Kreusch. However Timmerman was able to return after some quick repairs.

Lewis had the lead on the restart but right away Mike Carroll moved to the outside as they ran wheel to wheel. Carroll made his pass good on lap thirteen leaving Lewis to hold off Mahaffey and Bill Burba. Mahaffey claimed second on lap eighteen as Carroll moved up on slower cars. Meanwhile Weatherhead was moving up, taking fifth from Ryan Fleming as he moved in on Burba, passing him on the backstretch and then went after third place Lewis.

Carroll and his McDonalf's special picked up the win with Jason Mahaffey second with Derek Weatherhead just nipping Jim Lewis at the line for third with Lewis fourh and Bill Burba fifth.

Kyle Baugh and Heath tatman were the front row starters in the FAST Legend cars feature as Baugh jumped the gun causing a restart. Baugh again shot out front but here came fifth place starter Travis Braden who had the lead by the time they reached the frontstretch. Brian Nuckles then dropped Baugh to third as Jeff Denny ran fourth and Tatman fifth.

At the halfway Braden enjoyed a good lead as the cars strung out. When the checker waved it was West Virginia's Travis Braden taking the win with Brian Nuckles second and Kyle Baugh third. Fourth was Jeff Denny and fifth Heath Tatman.

It was Josh Longstreth and Tyler Mahaffey in the front row for the twenty lap sport stock feature. Longstreth took the lead only to have the caution come out when Mahaffey spun making for a complete restart. Well it was another restart when Travis Digges spun on turn four. Longstreth again was out front with Jeff Marsh right behind and previous winners Rodney Kreusch, Mike South and Shawn Stansell were right behind Marsh.

Caution flew on lap five when Ricky Young spun on turn two making for a bumper to bumper restart. Mike South was on the move after the restart as he moved into second with Stansell taking third from Marsh. Again the yellow flew when Tyler Mahaffey spun on turn three. Again Longstreth held the restart lead but South was right on his bumper looking for his third win.

South was about to take the lead when he and Longstreth both spun on turn one and Lonstreth was sent to the tail with South the new leader. Now it was Stansell chasing South with Stansell on South's bumper while Marsh, Richard Roush, and Rodney Kreusch wound out the top five, but again Mahaffey brought the caution out when he spun on turn three.

Lap twelve was a nightmare as four cars piled up on turn four as Ricky Young, Bob Stansell, Josh Longstreth and Richard Roush were involved with the Roush machine receiving heavy frontend damage and out as was Bob Stansell.

Stansell stayed right with South after the restart but another restart was necessary when Longstreth and Mahaffey tangled on turn four with both cars able to continue. Seven laps remained on the restart with a battle for third with Travis Digges taking third as Mike South Jr. took the win, his third of the year. Second was Shawn Stansell with Travis Digges third, Rodney Roush fourth and Rodney Kreusch fifth.

Rounding out the night was the compact feature which saw Ron Sagers and Dustin Smith leading the pack to the twenty lap feature as Sagers took command but the yellow flew as multi cars tangled on turn four.

Sagers and Smith again brought the field to the green with Todd Tuervene moving on the inside on turn two to take the lead as Bo Hoelscher took second and then diced with Tuervene for the lead, doing so on lap five. Bryan Lynch then moved into third at the halfway marker. Hoelscher enjoyed a good lead  which was cut short on lap eleven when Lynch and Sagers bumped o turn two with Sagers sent to the rear.

Hoelscher again shot out front as Lynch passed Tuervene for second and Sagers charged up to pass Smith as the white flag flew on Hoelscher who claimed his fourth win of the young season. Second was Bryan Lynch, Todd Tuervene third, Ron Sagers fourth and Dustin Smith.
