Estes Claims Kil-Kare Twin-25
Features
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh. (7/9) - NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series Late Model driver Gary Estes is on a hot streak
at Kil-Kare Speedway as he claimed the twin 25 lap features Friday
night, making it three wins in a row for the Miamisburg driver.
Estes and the Bond
Machine Pontiac started the evening off by recording fast time
(14.21, 95 mph) and then with the luck of the draw pulled the number
one starting berth in the first feature.
He quickly put the #75
out front at the drop of the green and never was seriously
challenged after that as the 25 laps ran without a caution. Sam
Heckman advanced from fifth to collect the second place money with
third going to Ron Simpson followed by Mike Miller and Tony Brunke.
He wasn't quite as
fortunate in the second draw for inversion as he drew a six car
inversion which put him in the sixth place starting berth for the
second 25 lap feature.
Sam Heckman led the
first four laps but he came that #75 of Estes to challenge Heckman,
making an outside pass to show as the leader on lap five and that is
where he stayed to the checker. Heckman was second with Ron Simpson
having a very good evening as he was third. Mike Miller was fourth
and Tony Brunke, who had to go the tail-end after an earlier mix-up
was rapidly moving through the field as the laps wound down to claim
fifth.
The E-Mod feature was
a nightmare as it required four restarts before the first lap was
recorded. Three cars, Mike Broaddus, Kyle Jones, and Derek Barnette
were eleminated in the first mix-up and later the cars of Ryan
Dunlevy and Rob Garrett were heavily damaged.
When action finally
settled down it became a two shoot-out between former track champs
Dick Dunlevy Jr. and Mike Carroll. Dunlevy brought his Turbo Blue
open-wheeler home first for his third win in a row and his fourth of
the season.
Carroll was a very
close second while Jerry Stapleton, Joe Jennings, and Rich Miller
rounded out the top five. Dunlevy was also fast timer at 14.44, an
average of 93 mph.
Two time Mini
Stock/Sports Truck driver Eric Snell looked as if he would claim his
third win of the year as he held the lead. On lap nine he suddenly
slowed with mechanical problems and dropped out the next lap. This
led to a showdown between the young and older. The older, Eddie
Flora at the age of 60+ put his Key&Lock Chevy S-10 out front
when Snell departed but the younger, Gary Eaton Jr. was knocking on
his rear bumper all the way to claim second while Flora claimed his
second win of the year.
Kenny Snyder was third
with Chuck Weaver fourth and Jerry Moore fifth in his first outing
of the year.
The event had an
unusual circumstance as on lap fifteen a raccoon appeared on
the track necessitating a caution flag.
The Pure Stock feature
turned out to be a heartbreaker for Tom Williams who had led fifteen
of the 20 lap feature. Win number four was in sight until he came
upon slower traffic. Heath White took advantage of Williams being
slowed by slower cars to whiz by to claim his fourth win of the
year. Williams was second with third going to Jeff Marsh.
Brian Rauch was fourth and fifth was Bret Clark. White was fast
qualifier at 15.31, 88 mph.
The Haerr and Williams
show returned Friday night in the Compact class as the two captured
the top two spots in the feature for the fifth time this year. Tim
Haerr brought his Mahaffey Auto Parts Beretta home first with
Williams in a Toyota a very vary close second. Rounding out the top
five were Brett Boykin, Allen Campbell, and Dave Lecocq.
This Friday the KOIL
Legends Cars return along with the Kil-Kare regular divisions with
the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
